My Project
As an educator, one of my primary goals is to make literature engaging, understandable, and enjoyable for all my students. In my 9th grade English class, we delve into some of the world’s most iconic works, including Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. However, when students first encounter Shakespeare, many are intimidated by the language and structure, and all too often, I hear a chorus of groans when Shakespeare’s name is mentioned. This reaction is not just frustrating, it’s tragic, as it prevents students from truly connecting with one of the greatest writers in history.
To change this narrative, I’m requesting funding for a classroom set of No Fear Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet.
These editions include the original text side by side with a modern English translation, making it easier for students to understand the meaning behind the language, connect with the characters, and ultimately, enjoy the timeless story.
With this resource, my students will have the tools they need to decode the text and appreciate the beauty and depth of Shakespeare’s writing. By offering them a more approachable version of Romeo and Juliet, I believe they will not only grasp the fundamental skills of reading and analyzing complex texts but will also begin to love the art of reading itself. When students no longer see Shakespeare as an obstacle but as a fascinating and relatable storyteller, they will be more likely to engage with other challenging works in the future.
The classroom set of No Fear Shakespeare will help make this transformation possible, allowing every student in my class to connect with the play, enjoy the reading experience, and build a lifelong love of literature. Thank you for considering this opportunity to help my students thrive and experience Shakespeare as he was meant to be—relevant, powerful, and enjoyable.
