When most young people look at a play written be William Shakespeare they see it as a different language. What would the world be like if they looked at it and saw the magnificence that is really written in the lines?
My students are inner city 9th graders with loads of talent.
They are actors, singers, dancers, musicians , and artists who love to use their talent to express themselves. My 9th grade students are Arts majors in New York City.
Due to the ever increasing costs to keep Arts schools open, the school's extra funds often go to purchasing the supplies that the children would not be able to otherwise afford for their majors. Therefore we are lacking the funds that would make purchasing these books possible.
My Project
I believe that young people from the inner city tend to have a larger disconnect when it comes to reading classic literature. The Shakespearean play is often met with groans of "Why do we have to read this?" or "It isn't written in English!"
I feel that this is because the teaching of Shakespeare has been thought of as too hard for these children who lack the background knowledge to relate to these texts.
I take a more "hands-on" approach when it comes to teaching Shakespeare and firmly believe that my students respond to this approach and learn how to understand and relate to Shakespeare's works.
This term I would like to read William Shakespeare's "The Comedy of Errors" and explore the humor behind this comedy as well as the amazing word play which exists within this text.
I am so very passionate about Shakespearean plays.
I feel that once students can understand Shakespeare they can develop a respect for it that will open them up to all forms of literature including the classics. I believe that "The Comedy of Errors" will give my students an opportunity to explore language and word play while taking a deeper look at the social interactions that take place within the play.
As 9th graders, a positive experience with Shakespeare will impact them forever.
