My Project
My students consist of ages 3, 4, and 5 years and are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. My substantially separate classroom is made up of 10 amazing students. My students live in a high poverty area and often struggle with having the correct materials to be successful.
Many of my students struggle with sensory processing disorder ( touch, smells, sounds, and being aware of their surroundings).
Sensory perceptions can be very frightening for students and at times painful, which can lead to anxiety and difficulty feeling comfortable in their environment.
Without the appropriate sensory tools in the classroom, many of my students will have difficulty learning and require a variety of sensory breaks to be successful. My students learn best with hands-on materials and opportunities to explore their creativity through sensory integration and play.
