Help me give my students with Cortical Visual Impairment and additional complex needs multi-sensory classroom resources that enable learning through touch, sight, sound, and movement.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
For students with Cortical Visual Impairment, using their vision is exhausting work. As Teachers of Students with Visual Impairment, it is our responsibility to provide opportunities for our students to learn and access their world through a multi-sensory approach even when vision is not available.
Multi-sensory activities can be a powerful tool when working with students with Cortical Visual Impairment.
They remove the distractions of the environment and stimulate the senses through sight, sound, touch, and movement. They have been shown to promote cognitive development, decrease tension, improve looking behaviors, improve tactile discrimination, and strengthen sensory efficiency skills. The development of these skills promotes learning and fosters independence.
By creating a safe and structured multi-sensory area within the classroom with materials such as busy boards, a sensory sequin wall, and sensory mini mats, we will be able to support our students with CVI and other disabilities to learn, understand, and explore while incorporating all of their senses.
