My Students

Young. Resilient. Flexible. Inspiring. Those are the words that our students embody each and every day. A new elementary school in New York City, we're in the process of adding a grade of students every year. Currently only pre-kindergarten through third grade, our school houses primarily young learners.

Whether remotely, in school part-time, or in school full-time our students make the best of their schooling to socialize, create positive experiences, and grow.

Two out of the three years our school has been operating, we've been affected by Covid-19. These unforeseen circumstances coupled with conflicting priorities in our limited school budget has made it difficult to prepare adequately for our youngest learners. Despite all of this, our learners remain connected and invested to their education excited to learn every day, however that may look.

My Project

When we teach math, we help our students understand new abstract concepts by engaging with them first in a hands-on concrete way. Without a foundational understanding of numbers, doing the math computations will make little sense. You may remember base ten blocks from your childhood, but we can help our students solidify an even greater understanding of numbers using manipulatives that represent all integers.

With these Integer Block Kits, even our students with special needs will be able to make sense of numbers and the values they represent.

Students will be able to build with these blocks--creating number representations, putting blocks together to add, and cancelling blocks out to subtract. As students gain a stronger number sense by building and manipulating, they will be able to transfer this skill to draw and compute on paper. Research shows that students with mathematical learning disabilities learn better when provided with opportunities to engage with new learning in a multi-sensory way building, seeing, and saying.
