Making Sense of Dollars and Cents: Building Our School Store
My students need school supplies such as pencils, erasers, paper, notebooks, dry erase markers, tissues, and coloring materials to stock our new school store. We will also need a cart for storage and organization.
I teach fifth grade and I have a classroom full of precious students who love to learn.
I want to help provide them with the opportunity to turn their wonder into wisdom.
Being a Title I school means that most of our students face economic disadvantages.
Due to these disadvantage, many of my students have limited opportunities and experiences outside of the classroom. Most of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Many are learning English as a second language. Each student is unique in their own way and I strive to meet those individual needs every day. My challenge is to encourage and instill in each child the opportunity to reach their fullest potential.
My Project
My students love a challenge and thrive on project-based activities, but authentic, hands-on math projects are often hard to come by…and math tends to be viewed as too difficult or too boring by far too many of them.
We need school supplies such as pencils, erasers, paper, notebooks, dry erase markers, tissues, and coloring materials to stock our new school store.
We will also need a cart for storage and organization. As a STEM school, we want to emphasize math, and are focused on providing engaging, real-life experiences for our students. Planning, promoting, and maintaining a real classroom business will provide my students with meaningful practice in vital math skills. This is such a great way to make place value, computation, and data analysis truly matter to them!
This school store will provide my students with the skills they need to gain confidence in math, grow in financial literacy, and make an impact on their classmates and teachers as well. These materials will provide exciting, ongoing, project-based math instruction that will make a huge difference for my students!
