My students need a new rug to brighten our room. The one we have now is falling apart. It has tape that is peeling off and distracts students from learning.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Singing songs, reading stories, classroom discussions...these are all events that take place on our rug in kindergarten. Ours is a mess! It is very old and dirty. Previous teachers made rectangles with electrical tape and it is now peeling off with the help of students who get easily distracted.
My students are an energetic group of kids with brilliant ideas and great capacity for learning.
They are Latino and African American children in an urban area of California. They attend a large school of about 1000 children, that services grades pre-K through fifth. The whole school receives free lunch due to the low socio-economic status of the students' families.
My classroom of kindergarteners are eager to learn and have shown enormous growth throughout the year. They recently celebrated the 100th day of school by completing projects at home and sharing them with their classmates. It was an extremely exciting event for the kids. As their teacher, I can see their love for learning and discovering in their faces and hear it in their voices. About half of my students speak Spanish as their first language and are learning English. I love to hear them use the vocabulary that they have learned in class, words like "fragile" or "admire." They are a wonderful group of little sponges!
My Project
The rug that I am requesting will be a beautiful addition to our classroom. In addition to brightening our room, it will improve the organization, behavior and learning of my students. As far as organization, it will assist in giving each student their own personal space on the rug. They will be assigned to sit on a number or letter on the rug. This provides them with a place they know is theirs, it also provides them with boundaries for not getting too close to other students.
Sometimes my students fill the rug, other times I ask them to "move to the perimeter." On the perimeter of this rug is the alphabet and it will be easier for them to organize their bodies on the perimeter if they have a specific letter to sit or stand on. It will also be a great tool for activities, in which the students can move around and stand on numbers or letters that we are learning.
As we look towards the end of our school year, my students will be excited to get a beautiful new rug.
It will add to the engagement of my students in learning, as well as diminish the distractions that currently exist with the rug that we have. Any donations to this request will be greatly appreciated by me and my students. It will be so fun to see their reaction when they walk into their "new" classroom. This will one great addition that will not go unnoticed. Thank you!
