Our school is located in the poorest congressional district in the nation—all students are eligible for free and reduced-price lunch.
The school is completely Latino and African American.
All students live in homes with incomes below the poverty line, about 40% (which is a LOT) of my students receive Special Education services, and 20% are English Language Learners. Despite the odds stacked against them, 100% of our graduating seniors are college or career-bound.
One of the best things a teacher can hear is a student coming back and telling you how well you prepared them for their future. My goal for ALL of my students is to leave them ready to embrace the real-world with the skills they need to be successful.
To do that, I work with my students to design my classroom in a way that works for them. As teenagers, they're usually able (and willing!) to explain what they need to be successful. The projects I post are all inspired by their needs. With help from donors like YOU, I'm able to make my classroom accessible to all students and learning styles!
My Project
This iPad will enable me to give students the learning experiences they need during the Covid-19 Crisis.
While students are remote-learning, we're struggling to differentiate for students with Special Education needs, are English Language Learners, or have limited access to the internet and wifi.
Having this device, will enable me to create lessons for remote learning that are engaging and accessible for students while they're outside of the traditional classroom.
By utilizing this device, I will be able to make video lessons for my students that will mimic the classroom-learning experience, including using iOS specific apps to create lessons that can be sent directly to students' cellphones or other small devices, but will still allow them to engage in learning fully. The lessons that I can create on this device will allow me to translate and slow down materials for students. I will be able to differentiate the learning experience for each individual student. When we get back to our classrooms, this device will become part of the collection of devices that we have for students to use for differentiated learning together. This will especially be helpful for my students who struggle to express their ideas in writing because they will be able to video themselves and leave their responses on the device for me to check at the end of the day. This is going to make differentiated learning in the classroom even more accessible (in the way we're learning it needs to be through remote learning) to ALL of my students, which is very exciting to think about!
