Making Real World Connections in Literature

Help me give my students the opportunity to learn about the apartheid in South Africa from the perspective of a person that grew up during it, Trevor Noah.

My Students

Our school has a very interesting dynamic because many of the students stay here for 9 years. We have been able to see them grow from kindergarten, all the way to 8th grade. I teach 8th graders that are generally 13, turning 14 this year.

My students are at a point in their life that they are maturing and beginning to look at life through their own ideas, beliefs, and morals.

This is the time that they need cultivating and help growing their personal opinions and perspectives.

My Project

This unit will allow my students to be exposed to another culture that has gone through a similar movement and social issue that happened here in America. So while they are learning about the apartheid in South Africa, they will also be able to make connections with the Civil Rights Movement here in America.

When students are able to make connections with what they are learning and what they have lived, it allows them to better understand both situations.

They will look at the complexity of race and racism within societies and how Trevor Noah uses elements of fiction to develop his argument about racism and how it impacts how people develop their identity.
