My Students
My students come from a variety of backgrounds and home environments, but they are resilient and come to school to learn each day. My students are ages 3, 4, and 5 years old and have moderate to severe low incidence disabilities ranging from autism to various genetic syndrome.
However, in my classroom labels hold no value.
My students hold so much potential and are capable of achieving whatever they set their mind to. I believe that every child can learn, it may not be in the same way or on the same day! Each student is wonderfully unique, creating a diverse group of learners with varying interests, levels of ability, areas of strengths, and learning styles. While each student is different, many effective strategies have been found to help students with special needs learn.
My Project
We are so lucky to live and learn in the beautiful city of Chicago. My students have many opportunities to make real life connections between what they learn in the classroom and the world around them by going to many of Chicago's museums. Most museums offer free opportunities for students to attend and explore. The Shedd Aquarium has offered a free field trip to my students with one to one chaperones, so that they can experience and learn more about various animals from our animal unit. This opportunity is so important for my students with disabilities due on the fact that they have a difficult time learning and making connection if they cannot see and interact with the content.
My biggest challenge is finding funds to afford a bus to allow my students to participate in these amazing opportunities!
Chicago Public Schools does not provide bus funds for preschool special education classrooms making it impossible for us to attend these amazing field trips. I am asking for one bus on the day of our field trip to get us to and from school to the Shedd Aquarium. I need your help to give my students this amazing opportunity to explore and connect with the world around them!
