Making Reading Readily Available

My students need book bins and bean bag seating to provide an area for independent and partner reading and research. The all purpose organizer will provide material storage.

My Students

Students reading on grade level is an awesome undertaking. Capturing the heart and mind of the students requires a student based physical environment that will enhance the experience of learning to read by stimulating all senses. "The more that you read, the more things you will know." Dr. Seuss

The students in our class have a true desire to learn.

Many of them are living in an environment where education isn't at the forefront of home life. It is my belief that we have the perfect time to guide them into making a choice to educate themselves for their future to be brighter. It is in the classroom that I get to know them and for 6 1/2 hours a day. We need to provide students with an environment that will make them want to learn and never leave. Our class has 18 students. We have 10 females and 8 males. We are in a rural community and many of our students live with grandparents. Many times they are only exposed to standard English at school and in books.

My Project

We are implementing the Daily 5 management system. With this program, students are required to be more independent when making their own choices for literacy blocks. The book bins would provide students with leveled books that they can carry with them around the classroom without risk of damaging books by dropping them. The bean bag seating would provide comfortable seating for students as the read with partners or by themselves. Organizational baskets will allow placement of materials used for research throughout the room. The fact that the items are color coordinated will provide ease of groupings.

My students love learning.

Reading, writing and research has guided many of our class projects this year. We use many different genres and strategies to support reading. The materials requested would enable us to gather information in a more organized fashion in order to help with our reading, writing and research goals.
