Making Reading FUN

My Students

Think of the best book you have ever read. You probably didn't want to put it down. Reading can be so much fun if you have the write tools to foster a love of learning. However, for most students who struggle to read it can be boring and cause them to get discouraged.

The students in my class come from a low economic area.

This extremely diverse group struggles to get the educational support at home that they need and very few are read to each day. Our school has a very high rate of students who are eligible for free and reduced lunch. Many students don't care about school or the need to excel because they are not encouraged at home. Our school provides a clean, safe environment for them to come and learn each day. I am proud of the technology that is available to each student. Students in my class struggle but are resilient and with the right amount of encouragement can surpass the statistics placed on them.

My Project

In the state of Florida, FCAT puts pressure on third graders to test well. They learn to read because they have to pass the test. My students need this reading center because they need to develop a LOVE of reading. I want them to read books that inspire them. I want them to read books that give them knowledge and are able to take them to places they can only read about. I want to see them all flipping pages and not being able to put the book down. A fun reading and listening center can give them that start. It is a fun way to read and still gain the skills they will need to do well on the test. First LOVE to read, school and testing success will follow.

I am a third year teacher who has taught first grade for 2 years.

I have been moved to third grade this year to inspire children to read so that they will do well on the test. As much as I would love to provide the very best for them sometimes a lack of funds stands in the way. Your support will help me to give them a reason to want to read.
