Making Reading Fun

My Students

Our students are energetic, active learners. They attend a Title I school and their parents often struggle to buy supplies, uniforms, and provide lunch. The parents do try their best to send their children to school every day so they can get a proper education, meals, and exercise and play in a safe environment. The students try hard at everything they do, from in the classroom to on the playground, because they like school and feel safe at school. The teachers try equally as hard because we know they are our future and need dedicated educators who care about their success and well-being.

My Project

I read at least one book a day to my students. Usually they are supplied by my school district and sometimes they are great books and sometimes they aren't. Luckily, my school is flexible and allows me to read books of my choosing as long as they are relevant to our themes.

My goal is to create a classroom library of fun and exciting books with characters my students love.

We read "Mouse's First Fall" and my students loved Mouse. I know they would love to continue to learn about Mouse's adventure through all the seasons and holidays. We also learn about community helpers but unfortunately our community helper books are dated. My students would relate better to books with modern technology that community helpers use like cell phones, laptops, and the latest construction vehicles.

Lastly, holidays are a huge part of my students lives because they are only 4 and 5 years old. Having books about Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day, and Halloween would allow us to celebrate the holidays and incorporate academics. Ultimately, I would like to make reading fun and these books would help tremendously.
