I am a 7th grade English Language Acquisition (ELA) teacher at M.S. 57 in Brooklyn. As my first year of teaching comes to a close, I'm beginning to realize how important it is to create a classroom environment that makes reading enjoyable for my struggling students. At our school, most students are reading significantly below grade level and are reluctant to do the reading necessary for their reading levels to improve. Next fall, I want to welcome my students into a classroom filled with comfortable reading spaces that create a warm and cozy environment and helps promote the idea that reading is fun! I believe that when my students are curled up with a good book on a comfy couch instead sitting at an uncomfortable desk, reading will seem less like work and more like a pleasurable experience that will help them become lifelong readers.
