Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with students with disabilities as well as at-risk students who are reading below grade level. I work in a 6-12 school and they need the tools to learn the basics so they can work on improving comprehension of the text. My students are special because they want to succeed, but at times have gotten pushed along and were never truly taught to understand the basic fundamentals that they need to be successful in reading. They need all the support they can get to help them be successful and transition eventually out of high school to trades, careers or hopefully some form of high level education.
They deserve the chance to feel success and this book to support there basics can be the first step in the write direction.
My Project
These materials will be instrumental in laying the ground word to support our students. The students we have have issues with understanding the grade level texts and can barely read words like brownie. The parents come to us in fear that their child will not be able to read a job application and we want to see ALL our students be successful and graduate from high school.
Students that struggle with reading begin to see the idea of being successful float away and turn to talking in class, being disruptive and refusing to do work.
Our school is making it our goal to change that feeling and make them know that anything is possible with a little bit of work.
The material we are requesting are 3 Ortin-Gillingham reading strategy books that can be used with the students in small groups. We are also asking for 1 Kindle. We realize that one kindle does not seem like a lot, but we want to have the students use it individually during lessons to read a book that peaks their interest and will hopefully guide them to become more independent readers.
