Making Reading Accessible Through Technology

My Project

In my junior high classroom, I always hear students talking about what they saw on TikTok or the latest video game. It's no surprise that students today are deeply invested in technology, so implementing it effectively in the classroom has never been more important. Fortunately, there are many wonderful online resources that students can access on their computers, including audiobooks. However, many students either forget their headphones at home or can't afford a pair, so they miss out on the opportunity to engage with stories in a more accessible way.

Many students are reluctant to read a physical book, but if they're able to *listen* to that same book, it makes a significant difference.

Audiobooks are more accessible for students with special needs, attention issues, and auditory learning preferences. I've even used the podcast "The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel" with my seventh graders, and it was a huge hit! They were able to make predictions about the plot, explore characters' development, and most importantly, become invested in the story. While listening is a less "traditional" way to engage with texts, it's just as effective and valid as reading a physical book.

I plan to use the headphones to allow students to listen to audiobooks and video lessons. The chargers and extension cord will be used when students forget theirs so they can still complete their digital work, which is the bulk of work in my classes. All of these materials will also be helpful during standardized testing, particularly for the students with auditory learning needs. I hope you're able to help me provide students with opportunities to succeed with their technology!
