Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember when you had to take a state test? Or any type of test to show what you've learned in school? It can be stressful. My intervention students need more resources to help them reduce their anxieties toward taking the new form of the state test- Smarter Balance.
The students that are serviced are from K-5.
They are students who aren't meeting their academic standards in reading, writing, and comprehension. The Learning Center provides assistance to try and close their achievement gaps. This is the only type of Intervention they receive during the year since the school district no longer offers free tutoring services. My students are in a public school in California. All the students participate in the school-reduced lunch program. Many of them only feel safe at school. Our school is located in a city that is #2 in gang activity. All of the students that are attending the Learning Center are hard workers and try their best everyday. This may be the last opportunity for the 5th graders to close some of their gaps. These resources will further allow them to succeed both at school and at home.
My Project
Right now, the only form of Intervention that the students will receive at my school is through the Learning Center. The district no longer offers free tutoring services. Due to budget cuts as well, our school isn't able to provide after-school classes or Saturday school. The students will be taking a new form of state test-Smarter Balance. They've never taken this test before. The students needs lots of practice on the test format. The test isn't multiple-choice anymore. They have to write their responses. The Common Core State Standards Workbooks in Language Arts will help them be better prepared. It will allow them to get the extra practice that they need. Some of the students need extra help with their grammar skills. The language arts games will help them improve those skills as well.
Donations to this classroom project will make a huge difference to the students in the Learning Center.
They'll be provided with tools to help them close their achievement gaps. They'll be able to see progress and feel successful doing it as well.
