Help me give my students the materials to enhance their statistics curriculum. We use a LOT of Skittles to study relative frequency, count disparities, probability, and more!
I currently teach at a Title I magnet school that serves grades 6 through 12. I teach 6th grade mathematics, Prob Stat Honors, and AP Statistics. The majority of our students are eligible for free or reduced price lunch, but that does not prevent them from wanting to succeed!
I have many activities planed that will enhance the curriculum, but I can't rely on student/family donations due to my school's demographics.
Our school's students go on to earn scholarships at top-tier schools, due to their commitment to success in rigorous courses.
My Project
Students retain knowledge longer when they can "see" the concepts. I like to use fun hands-on activities to bring math concepts alive, and help my students gain a greater understanding of abstract concepts.
Skittles can be used for multiple lesson types - color frequency and relative frequency, disparity among bag counts, comparing small sample sizes to larger sample sizes, how companies deal with variability of product samples, and so much more!
We make lots and lots of graphs using Post-It graphs and colored dots. This helps the students visualize the difference in samples.
