Making Poetry Count with Clint Smith's Counting Descent

My Project

The students in my AP Literature and Composition class are currently taking their first advanced English class of their high school careers. They know that we are going to read (and wrestle with) some great literature in this class. They know that we are going to talk and write about great literature in this class. They (think they) know that poetry must be difficult to understand. They (think they) know that poetry that qualifies as great literature must have been written by someone who has already been dead for a long time.

Reading Clint Smith's poetry collection Counting Descent will provide the students in my AP Literature and Composition course the opportunity to study a a collection of contemporary poetry by a living poet.

This will help my students to understand that poetry is more than just lines of verse written by long-gone writers. It is more than inspirational quotes that appear solely on Instagram. Contemporary poetry is more than just novels in verse. Poets are strategic and intentional in their writing of collections of poetry to craft messages that go beyond single poems. Being able to study this collection as a whole class will give students the opportunity to work with their peers, to do a deep dive on a text that might seem simple at first but has layers upon layers of meaning. It will help them to see that their literary analysis skills are much greater than they initially believed them to be. It
