Making Phonics Lessons Stick to Memory With Magnets

Help me give my students individual access to white boards that will be used with magnetic letters during phonics and small group instruction to help them learn reading and writing skills.

My Project

My students are very resilient and hard working little guys. Unfortunately, the tolls of the pandemic and shortened instruction time has limited the amount of classroom learning they have been able to receive. For this reason, I have first graders entering my classroom that still cannot recognize the letters of the alphabet, much less know what sounds each letter makes. This makes reading instruction very remedial and challenging in many cases. I have seen tremendous success when I allow my students to handle manipulatives to learn. Last year, I was able to get a class set of magnetic letters for each of my students. Unfortunately, the white boards they utilize are NOT magnetic, which makes it difficult for them to put letters in position to form words.

These individual MAGNETIC boards will make the words stick to the board and help my students make concrete connections between letters and sounds and will also benefit their blending skills.

The goal is to make students better readers which will set them up for educational success throughout their school journey!

The materials listed in this project will be used in the following ways: 1) The magnetic dry-erase boards will be used by students to build and model writing. 2) The easel purchased by this project will be utilized by me during small group instruction at my "work table" to demonstrate to students how to use letters to form words. 3) The slip covers will be used to trace writing worksheets so students can build muscle memory of how to write letters and words.

Of course, these white boards will also be utilized during other academic disciplines like math.
