Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
My students come from low-income families. Most are bilingual and receive free lunch. Many of the students are not able to go outside after school because they live in neighborhoods that are too dangerous. Their parents attempt to keep them safe by keeping them indoors so that their only release and activity comes from attending school. Even in the worst weather conditions, many of the students come to school to escape their homes, receive love and attention from the staff, and eat breakfast and lunch.
They face many obstacles in life, and school is their only source of freedom, expression and enjoyment. At school they are able to safely interact with adults and peers. They come from areas where there is little leadership and a community that does not take the time to know and raise them. With all these obstacles, these students still strive to receive good grades and awards for their accomplishments. They deserve opportunities like every other child but need help from others to do so.
Students need to see how math relates to the real world and applies to every day life. Sometimes it is difficult for them to see how math impacts everything around them. It is also difficult in the 7th and 8th grade to get them excited to learn about math. This project allowed them to relate to the real world because they all watch football and understand the amount of money and time that goes into all those commercials during the Super Bowl. This project will allow my students to work together to solve problems. Students need to be encouraged and practice the skills they learned and the project gives them the opportunity to do so!
In Their Own Words
While working on a worksheet on scientific notation we asked Ms. Kyle how could we relate this to the real world? She said you can use this with any numbers, both really large and really small. Our favorite sport is football so, she said you could even relate scientific notation to football! We want to research the cost for creating and having an ad during the Super Bowl. We want to be able to figure out how much different amounts of times would cost these companies in both standard and scientific form. We would like to create a diagram to go along with this project that can be presented in our hallways. Instead of getting ruined when displayed in the hallways of our school, we want to laminate our work so it is not destroyed.
We came up with this project because we were excited about scientific notation and football. We can become leaders by showing our work to the other students in the school and aspire them to work as hard as we do! In order to become leaders, you must influence those around you to work hard.
This project is important to us because we can relate this to our favorite sport. It helps us to understand the amount of money that goes into sports and advertisements. Our project will challenge us to think of different amounts of time and estimate how much money it will cost.
