For my students everyday is a challenge. I teach students with a wide range of disabilities giving them challenges in learning every day. Their disability isn’t the only obstacle they face daily. My school is a Title I school with the majority of students on free or reduced lunch. Their environments are a constant challenge and school should not contribute to that. I will do everything I can to alleviate some challenges and make life just a little more welcoming for these students. I want to give them a sense of hope, success, and future.
My Project
These early literacy and math tools and sets will give our students the opportunity for a hands on approach to teaching students with disabilities. We use differentiated methods of teaching and teach to the individual student based on their needs. With these hands on manipulatives we will be able to practice and learn new skills in math and reading. The skills I hope to acquire are early literacy skills in decoding, phonological awareness, and comprehension. With the letter formation sand trays or mini magic boards students will use a muntisensory approach to feel their word or letter practice. This multisesory approach is vital with many students with disabilities. The math tools with help with number sense and addition and subtraction strategies. The Simple Addition and Subtraction puzzles will make students visualize math problems and make hands on connections. We also need differentiated seating for floor options and headphones for technology.
