This upcoming year I will have a classroom full of lively and bright 10-11 year olds. I will have 17-19 students in my homeroom classroom. I will teach Science to all 50+ of our 5th graders and teach reading to about 20 students across two grade levels. Some of my students live on the lake and other are less fortunate. Some of my students are dealing with unimaginable home lives. Some see their parents struggling. Some are on free/reduced price lunch. Some are absent for days at a time.
"Some days you just have to create your own sunshine." This year I will be moving to a new classroom, that doesn't have any windows.
My new classroom is in the middle of our building so I have no windows to the outside. Providing lighting around the room, I will be creating our own 'sunshine' so that we can learn throughout the day.
My Project
Because last year was my first year of teaching, my students and I got whatever things were left behind by the previous teacher of my classroom. All year my students had to sharpen their pencils in another classroom due to a lack of a working pencil sharpener. Our hole puncher barely worked-so we lost a paper or two (or ten) because it was not hole punched.
We will 'create our own sunshine' with floor lamps to light our classroom while we work in our flexible seating.
I am so lucky to be following my students to 5th grade this year. However the change in grades means a change in classrooms. We will be moving into a classroom in the middle of the building, therefore we have no windows-so sadly we have no sunlight coming in. Last year my students lovd working with the lights off. We kept the blinds open so the sunshine would light our class as they worked around the room in various flexible seating options.
