Help me give my students supplies that reflect a welcoming and inclusive library environment! This includes bulletin board decorations, markers, and other items.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My middle school is in a culturally-diverse, high-poverty area in Durham, NC. We are a Title I school and 100% of our students receive free lunch and breakfast.
Many of our students do not have access to the supplies and safe environment that students do elsewhere.
We are working to ensure that the Media Center is a place for students to know that they are safe and welcome. Our mission is to act as a community gathering space for students and staff to support their multiple literacy goals.
My Project
For many students, the Media Center/library represents a place where they can take a break from the craziness of middle school. It's a place where kids can read, draw, write, work on schoolwork, or pursue creative projects. Creating an environment that is not just inviting and colorful but representative of our population makes a world of difference.
All kids deserve to see themselves represented in school decorations and activities.
The materials I have asked for in the project will beautify the Media Center with an emphasis on diverse representation for students of color. I hope to create an atmosphere that reflects the diversity of my school's population and that of the world, so that students who enter this space know that they are deeply loved, valued, and respected.
