My Students

My students have a variety of needs, including vision impairments, hearing impairments, and orthopedic impairments. We require a variety of resources in order to reach each child's specific goals by working with their personal strengths.

My students are genuine and loving.

They do not see the world as most of us. They recognize more simple emotions, such as happiness, frustration, and familiarity. They are, however, more aware then we necessarily realize, trapped by a body that doesn't cooperate. The students attend a large public school and are the only self-contained class within the school of almost 700 students. This allows the rest of the student body to easily recognize these students and greet them, socialize with them, and offer to help them around the school. The kids enjoy music, pictures, and being outside! They have the ability to start each day fresh, something even I still admire about them.

My Project

I am requesting a wide variety of items because each of them will play a special role in the classroom. The washcloths are important because we prepare and feed our students in our classroom, not in the school cafeteria in order to provide them with a more conducive environment to gain feeding skills. The switch is also a valuable asset because the students are all non-verbal and depend on augmented devices to express themselves. The small talk is another way to allow the students to identify an object and name it despite their inability to speak. I think non-verbal students deserve words more than anyone. The cushion and the weighted pillow are both wonderful ways to allow the students to floor sit while working on goals, comfortably. The weighted pillow acts as a stress reliever, applying pressure to a child when they become anxious or excited. The CD and the DVD are both ways to stimulate the students during rest period. These cause the students to independently engage themselves.

My students mean a lot to me.

Their happiness, progress, and most importantly, their safety, is very important. However, it can be difficult obtaining resources and funds to purchase items for my class. Due to our small class size, we can appear as a very small population against a huge student body. I want to ensure that my students are given every opportunity to gain skills and independence with the resources we have to offer them.
