This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Make our best, better!” that’s our class motto. These highly motivated kids are eager to learn, and an interactive tablet would be perfect for our classroom. My students would love to work together in small groups, do research with the tablet, and present their findings to the class.
My third grade students are incredibly inquisitive and love to learn.
Unfortunately, their access to knowledge is limited due to the low socio-economic level of our community. The majority of my students do not have a computer in their home and lack access to the Internet. My school is a Title 1 school with 85% of our students at a low-income level. With the huge cuts in our school’s budget this year, there is no money for new computers. Most of our computers are older than my 8 and 9-year-old students. Although my third graders need to learn how to use technology to access information, the few computers we have are antiquated, outdated, and unreliable.
My Project
I want the best for my students, and I strive to make every one of them college prepared and career ready. In the 21st century workforce all students will need to be able to 1: effectively work with others 2: adapt to changing technology and 3: communicate clearly both orally and in writing. The tablet will be a perfect tool to help my students prepare for the future. In small groups, my students will use the tablet to research topics. Together they will synthesize the information and orally present their findings to the class. While using the tablet, students will learn to work collaboratively, be comfortable and adept at using new technology, and will speak publicly to their peers with confidence.
In my own family, my two children have been fortunate to have daily access to a computer and the Internet since they were very young.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if all students could have that same opportunity? My students deserve that opportunity. They are at a tremendous disadvantage in this digital world. A tablet would empower and enrich the education of my students. We must narrow the growing achievement gap, and give every student the kind of education we'd want for our own children.
