My Students
Try listening to the top 40 countdown without tapping your toes. Rhythm and music are a part of us. They define our history, our culture, and our heritage. Unfortunately, too often music education is the first thing to go when preparing for high stakes testing. But it doesn't have to be this way!
I teach vibrant, thoughtful, creative, and talented third graders in a high needs, low income school.
It is rare that a day goes by without one of my students tapping out a beat on their desk. Music is a part of their fibers. Research shows that teaching students even basic music theory can improve their overall achievement in school, especially in math. My goal is to teach students the skills they need to read basic music and play more than just the beats in their heads. I hope they go on to become the world's next Mozart or Beethoven.
My Project
This project has the very basic foundations of music theory. Students will learn how to read notes with recorders. They will learn how to tap out beats with their rhythm sticks. Each day they will have the chance to play rhythm instruments that will help them learn basic music theory while still having fun. They will keep track of their music in pocket folders that will hold their daily music sheets. Finally, they will be able to write music interactively with the music staff dry erase board.
For so many, music is a gift we were given without thought.
However, the students in my class will go through elementary school without any knowledge of how to read notes or clap out a rhythm. One class, one teacher, one donation can change that and impact their lives forever. Not only does music enrich our souls, it can help provide students with theory and practice to help them become well rounded individuals.
