Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember when you discovered music? My students are very enthusiastic about playing percussion in class, and they need high-quality instruments in order to reach their potential as musicians.
The students in my classes are culturally diverse.
They have connections to nearly all regions of the world. I am working on building a classroom where students have instruments that reflect their cultural origins. I have begun to acquire instruments from Latin America and the Middle East to go along with traditional Western instruments.
We also house one of four Talented & Gifted Enrichment Programs in the city and was the first to have a Bilingual T.A.G. Program. The program helps students not only to become academically successful but guiding them into leadership roles in the school and the community.
My students are fortunate to have a building constructed in 2007 with access to various musical instruments and technology. Our music program is growing every year with continued support from administration and parents.
My Project
It is extremely important for students to create music in general music settings, especially in the middle school grades. This skill is a very essential component of the National Core Arts Standards. iPads are a very engaging and dynamic teaching and learning tool which can be used to achieve this standard.
Student collaboration and interaction musically will increase through the use of iPads.
iPads can be used for music composition, production and skills acquisition. Apple provides a large amount of loop based music that is available and accessible to students. Garageband is the most well known and user friendly app which has simplified the Digital Audion Workstation; making the digital composition process accessible to students. With this app, students can be their own sound engineers. Audio recording is also simplified with an iPad. Students can use the devise, a microphone and headphones. Music notation can be done on the iPads students can arrange their own music through NotateMe, NoteFlight, and Notion.
Students in my Middle School classes learn Guitar, Keyboard, Drumming; they rehearse in class to share their music with the school community. Apple provides multiple apps for students to work independently and in small groups to improve their skills on their instruments.
