This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a small, community-based Title I school in East Oakland. Students are primarily from low-income immigrant families and are highly motivated to achieve.

The majority of our students are English language learners from immigrant households.

Their families are from Guatemala, Yemen, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, and the U.S. They are hungry to learn and deserving of everything that we can creatively muster to provide for them. We are working hard to create projects that foster their love of learning and empower them to use their creativity to expand their world.

My Project

My students come from diverse backgrounds, and for many of them, being a student at school can be very hard work. I am requesting the materials to help create a calm corner in my classroom where students can go to briefly get away from a frustrating task or overstimulating activity and address their emotions.

Rather than sending students out of the classroom when they are escalated, I want to create a calm and nature-focused safe space where students can go to calm themselves down using pre-taught strategies.

To support students in their coping and self-regulation skills, I have requested 3 therapy and mindfulness games that support students in developing their awareness of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that will improve their social, coping, and self-control skills. Additionally, I am requesting meditation cushions, aromatherapy, chimes, and student-selected stuffed animals to create a cozy atmosphere where my students can de-escalate and guide themselves through meditation exercises. (Sixth graders love stuffed animals!) I hope that by giving them the tools and space to develop their emotional awareness and mindfulness, I will support them in developing skills that will be useful not just in the classroom, but throughout their lives.
