My students are a group of passionate readers that LOVE book series.
Earlier in the year, my class discovered the "Flat Stanley" book series during our fiction unit and could not put them down. Then, during our nonfiction unit, my students discovered the "Who Was..." series and devoured those books also. We have just moved into our mystery unit and, as you can guess, my students are craving more of their favorite mystery series books.
My Project
Every year, I begin the mystery unit with mystery book clubs. Thanks to some very generous donors from DonorsChoose, I was able to get sets of the first books of some of the newer mystery series on the market (Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew, Ballpark Mysteries, and Clubhouse Mysteries). We are halfway through finishing book clubs, and my students are already chomping at the bits to find more books from those series. Only one problem...our library doesn't carry these series. So, to DonorsChoose I come!
These books will not only make some 3rd graders VERY happy, but it will also help to improve reading stamina and comprehension.
Most teachers will tell you that the first step to make a lifelong reader (other than teaching them how to read) is teaching them to love reading. Series are so powerful in that area. Students can connect to characters across books and are more interested in picking up another book. My class would be ecstatic if we were able to have these complete series.
