My Project

Over the last year, I've read and implemented teaching practices from Peter Liljedahl's book "Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K-12: 14 Teaching Practices for Enhancing Learning." The following excerpt shares what the research revealed: "What emerged as optimal was to have the students standing and working on vertical non-permanent surfaces (VNPSs) such as whiteboards... It did not matter what the surface was, as long as it was vertical and erasable (non-permanent)." The fact that it was non-permanent promoted more risk taking, and the fact that it was vertical prevented students from disengaging. Taken together, having students work, in their random groups, on VNPSs had a massive impact on transforming previously passive learning spaces into active thinking spaces where students think, and keep thinking, for upwards of 60 minutes."

These mobile whiteboards will offer ultimate flexibility for the full implementation of this teaching strategy.

The most long term, impactful thing that we can do for this group of students is build their confidence and critical thinking skills. These mobile whiteboards will allow students to take risks and increase their thinking and ultimately support maximum learning!

Another teaching practice to promote a thinking classroom is creating "Notes to My Future Forgetful Self". In class, we spend time summarizing our learning on graphic organizers designed to be used during later lessons. This year I have started printing our graphic organizers on colored paper for each unit of study. The colored paper helps students keep their future forgetful self notes organized and has helped support students in using their own resources to improve their mathematical understanding. The reams of colored paper will help continue our use of the "Notes to My Future Forgetful Self" routine.
