My Students

This year I have discovered the power of Thinking Maps. They help my students get their ideas down on paper in a way that make sense to them. I want to build on the success I have seen by learning how to more effectively incorporate Thinking Maps into my reading curriculum.

This is my first year teaching second grade and I love it.

I have found that my second graders are like sponges! They are still learning how to read and process information. Every day I watch my students give it their all, and I want to help them develop systems to make reading easier. I have found Thinking Maps to be tremendously beneficial for students and I want to learn how to use them more effectively with reading comprehension. By training to help build a solid foundation on Thinking Maps for myself, I will be more prepared to help my students build that same foundation.

My Project

I am requesting to attend a professional development on how to implement Thinking Maps more effectively into my reading program. The training is called Comprehension Strategies for Constructing Meaning with Kate Pekar. This year my grade level has incorporated Thinking Maps into our curriculum. I have found them to be a powerful tool for students to use to organize their thinking. I now want to take using Thinking Maps to the next level by learning the best practice of incorporating them into my reading program. The Common Core standards ask our students to process a lot of nonfiction text. This can often be difficult to read. I hope by attending this training that I will learn strategies to help my students organize their thinking. I want to help my students see that making meaning from text is simpler when you have a system in place, and Thinking Maps is a system that is able to reach across all disciplines of study.

I am excited to learn more about incorporating Thinking Maps into our reading curriculum.

Being able to attend a training in late July will allow me to have time to reflect on the current year’s instruction, but will still provide enough time to implement changes for the fall. I am looking forward to next year!
