My students need art supplies to express their learning through various modalities. We'll use clay and clay tools to to create sculptures and watercolor paints to create painting masterpieces. And we'll need a drying rack!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are kind and caring children who enter the classroom with a range of strengths and needs. In my South Bronx public elementary school, we are a community of diverse learners.
The school welcomes students who are children of immigrant families, students who are living in high poverty, and students who are learning English as a new language.
Despite those challenges, they come together to form a strong community of learners and friends.
In my ICT kindergarten classroom, my students are excited, energetic, and motivated to learn. They love reading and making art. They love drawing and writing stories about their lives. They love playing and exploring what it means to be a good friend. They are limitless in their aspirations and potential.
My Project
When it comes to making meaning of the world around them, my students are diverse individuals with unique challenges and needs. Some express their learning through writing, while other like to get hands-on and create. They all enjoy exploring our different curriculum themes through various art and tactile experiences. In my Kindergarten classroom, we've found ways to incorporate social studies themes into our reading and writing curricula, but something is still missing: ART!
This year, my students will learn about the world around them (their families, their school community, and their neighborhood) through books, field trips, writing, and if this project is funded, through art.
They will use clay and clay tools to create stores and buildings in their neighborhood that they'd like to add if they could. They will use watercolor paint and paper to make portraits of themselves and their families. They will use the drying rack to safely dry their masterpieces so they can later beautify their school walls. By engaging in joyful exploration of clay and painting materials, students will deepen their learning and understanding.
Our curriculum this year will include creating self portraits using various medium (pencil, markers, paint, collage and clay). We'll also make models of our classroom, school, and neighborhood. We'll study buildings, transportation and careers that are critical to our neighborhood and world. We won't just read about these big ideas, students will also create what interests them most about the topics.
