Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

My students come from low-income families. Most are bilingual and receive free lunch. Many of the students are not able to go outside after school because they live in neighborhoods that are too dangerous. Their parents attempt to keep them safe by keeping them indoors so that their only release and activity comes from attending school. Even in the worst weather conditions, many of the students come to school to escape their homes, receive love and attention from the staff, and eat breakfast and lunch.

They face many obstacles in life, and school is their only source of freedom, expression and enjoyment. At school they are able to safely interact with adults and peers. They come from areas where there is little leadership and a community that does not take the time to know and raise them. With all these obstacles, these students still strive to receive good grades and awards for their accomplishments. They deserve opportunities like every other child but need help from others to do so.

Geometry is an important part of everyday life and can be seen almost everywhere. Angles, shapes, lines, line segments, curves, and other aspects of geometry are every single place you look. Letters themselves are constructed of lines, line segments, and curves!

Many professions require at least a foundational understanding of geometry. Sports, construction, weaving, sewing, decorating, as well as many others require the use of the concepts learned through the study of geometry. In many of these professions, the knowledge learned through a complete understanding of geometric principles has provided not only an increase in safety, but also an increase in the creation of tools, skill level enhancement, and aesthetically pleasing arrangements. With this project, students will not only transform various geometric shapes but will also be able to decorate their classroom and display their work where it will be safely laminated and protected.

In Their Own Words

We were working in stations, circulating the room and graphing figures on coordinate planes. Instead of having Ms. K give us figures to plot, we decided we wanted to create our own figures, plot them, and create our own transformation (reflection, rotation, dilation or translation). We wanted to display our work to transform our classroom into an entire room of figures!

In this project we become leaders because we are creating our own figures and coming up with our own transformations! This project allows us to design and create as well as make decisions and problem solve. Our project allows us to display our understanding of geometry, a huge part of math and a huge part of life that can be found everywhere.

We already have our idea for the project but need to supplies to do it! We need the paper to do it on, present and preserve our work. With this funding, we can laminate our project, use the tape, glue and stapler to hang it up, and display our work both in and outside the classroom!
