Making Math Tangible

My Students

My students are eager eighth graders, preparing to be academically, socially, and emotionally ready to succeed in high school. I have students at various mathematical levels of achievement, but all students give me their full effort and are willing to make mistakes in the process of learning.

My students come from diverse backgrounds, teaching each other about where they are from, their extracurricular activities, and supporting each other through each day.

Our school fosters a very supportive and inclusive environment. I strive for my classroom to be a safe space for students during class and during free periods.

My Project

I continue to strive to make mathematics a tangible and visual subject for my middle school students. Math is too often viewed as procedural or purely memorization. I have utilized algebra tiles and whiteboards to help students tangibly do math or visualize the concepts but we need more materials for all students to use.

My biggest class has 30 students and we do not have enough supplies for all students.

We need more square tiles so that all students can have their own set of manipulatives. The square tiles help students to understand the relationship between perfect squares and square roots. The counters will help students understand properties of integers. I have whiteboards but the big graphs will allow both myself and students to do graphs in-class for all to see.

With your help, we will have manipulatives that all students can use to help them better understand mathematics!
