Making Math Real for World Class Students

My students need activities to complete during guided math centers. I am starting a new guided math time this year and these supplies will give the students games and fluency practice to complete during math centers.

My Students

My students live in a multicultural environment. Over 30% of our school are English Language Learners. Over 90% of the students are considered Free and Reduced Lunch. Our school is in a community that is ravaged by addiction and violence. Many students do not have two supportive parents at home. These students come in disadvantaged and leave as students who are ready for middle school. Our students are caring for one another and have pride in their school. They are hungry to learn and come everyday ready to be engaged. Students are always lined up waiting for the doors to be opened every morning!

My Project

These supplies will help these underprivileged students have a real mathematical understanding and number sense. 4th grade is a the grade where most students learn how to fluently multiply and divide. They also deepen their understanding of fractions. Without the knowledge of this they will not be able to properly function in society. With these supplies, students will finally understand math on a concrete level. Many of the students in my class come in with little to no mathematical help at home.

These materials will allow my students to have hands on activities to do during a math centers rotations.

Students will be receiving direct instruction in a small group and rotating through centers that include fluency practice, flashback math, math games, technology time and even independent practice.

I have requested picture books that have mathematical themes, such as "Fractions in Disguise" and "Multiplying Menace". These books will allow math to be presented in a linguistically and help students understand themes associated with mathematics. I have requested dice and several math games like "Head Full of Numbers" that show students math can be fun. These students learn best when having fun and staying engaged. I have also requested fluency activities such as Hot Dots review cards and the Dry Erase Pockets. Students have to be able to add, subtract, and multiply fluently by the end of 4th grade. I am hoping that fluency practice daily throughout the year will increase their ability by the end of the year.
