Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My third graders are amazing kids that are learning in two languages - English and Spanish. They are creative, witty and always ready for a challenge. Be it doing a research project on the solar system, building a tower as part of STEAM, or delving deep into solving mathematical equations. None of this has changed since distance learning began. We've just had to be more resourceful.

What's most amazing about my students is their ability to adjust and thrive in spite of all the challenges they face.

You see, I teach at a neighborhood, Title I school in the district's largest Dual Language Program. The majority of my students are on free or reduced lunch and are among the most vulnerable in our community. Some of them are shy newcomers to the United States. Others are proficient in both languages and always willing to help each other.

I feel privileged to be their teacher and am in awe of the sacrifices their parents make to create a brighter future for their children. I am committed to providing my students with the best education.

My Project

By funding this project, you will provide my students with the tools they need during this pandemic to achieve the most important math standards in third grade. At the top of the list is learning their multiplication facts, determining the area and perimeter of plane shapes, and using the metric system to measure real life objects. These are important skills they will use the rest of their lives.

Pedagogically, young mathematicians learn best when they engage in solving problems using hands-on, real-life experiences.

Hence, they will use the colorful unit cubes and grafting paper to model multiplication groups and arrays, to measure areas, to learn the metric system. The cubes can be linked and will help me to provide intervention for students struggling with regrouping. Multiplication flash cards, play cards and dice are a fun way to practice multiplication facts. Students love to split up into Zoom breakout rooms and play games, such as Math Around the World. This gives me an opportunity to observe and assess their strengths and needs.

In my opinion, having their own rulers to measure the world is a right of passage for third graders. Having their own set of cards, dice, cubes will enable my students to complete their independent work. They will also be able to play math games they've learned with their parents and siblings.
