Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a class full of diverse students from many areas of Los Angeles. Many of my students travel by bus very early in the morning. They then travel by bus and arrive home late in the afternoon. They do this to get the best possible education available to them.
My students are very curious and so very kind!
They come from a variety of different backgrounds and different experiences. They are eager to learn and make the best of their education. When exposed to new concepts, they get very excited and are eager to explore these concepts deeper. These students are our future marine biologists, physicists, and mathematicians as long as we keep them excited about these fields.
My Project
I just finished an awesome math training (UCLA CGI Math) during my Summer break. The methods and materials used will be a great benefit to my students for years to come.
These materials will give our students real math experiences.
The building bricks (think Lego) can be used for multiplication, division, fractions, addition, subtraction, and also in STEM activities (still working on plans for that). An example: "Show three times six using your building bricks."
The rulers have been an idea for several years. These will actually fit in the student pencil boxes allowing students constant access to rulers. Previously, the longer rulers kept getting in the way and we passed them out each time students needed to use them.
These materials will help us make further steps to helping students "understand" math rather than "do" math.
