My Project
This year I am working with a diverse group of energetic Kindergarteners in need of interactive and engaging modes of practice. They came from many different backgrounds and experiences and have meshed into a wonderful working unit who daily build our recognition of numbers and an understanding of their value. To do this well, more than paper and pencils is required. Small group practice for all is essential and when I am in these groups the remaining 4 and 5 year olds require high interest activities that are of quality to keep them engaged and moving forward as learners.
Through this project I hope to provide my students with a group of activities that allow them to independently practice composing and decomposing numbers.
These tools include light tables with manipulative to move and build values with, weighted numerals that allow children to use a balance and compare the values of numbers, and flashcard activities where children will practice viewing basic facts and computing sums and breaking numbers into their place values. These tools are building blocks that can then be used in more complex math and literacy work with a minimal purchase of extension pieces and would be wonderful to have for young learners to grow their own knowledge through hands on and engaging activities.
