Over the years, I have always explained to my students the importance of taking notes and being able to use them when they are learning new Math topics. I require my students to write their notes with multiple-colored ink pens to make them colorful and draw them back to their notes when it is time for them to practice their new skills. I prefer to provide students with ink pens so that everyone can do this without requiring them to have their own.
Literacy in mathematics is very important, especially on state tests.
When students don't understand what they are being asked to do, they can not perform to the best of their abilities. Therefore, I require students to make flashcards for all of the vocabulary terms that we utilize in class. They are given index cards of multiple colors as well as a ring to keep all of their cards on.
I find it more useful to use foldable or quick note sheets instead of PowerPoints for certain topics. Teachers Pay Teachers have an abundance of these on their site, along with hands-on activities that my students always enjoy completing versus the usual worksheet. I enjoy brightening up the note sheets and activities by using colored paper instead of white paper to print on.
All of my students aim to be successful and are willing to try; they just have to be given the correct tools to be successful. So, with the help of this project, I will be able to start my students on their path to success as they continue to grow in their understanding and learning of mathematical topics.
