Students need to move! They need to use their hands to stay engaged in lessons. They need to play while they learn! Eliminating boring worksheets and providing fun, game playing opportunities will help to increase student engagement and differentiate instruction to reach a wider variety of learners.
93% of the students at my school live in poverty.
In general, their home lives are chaotic and unstable. In order to reach them, it's important that the lessons I create are extremely engaging and fun. The kids need to move around and enjoy the activity they are learning. I need to be creative in how I present them with new concepts and what materials I use to re-teach those who do not understand. I need to make sure my students find value in what I am presenting them with; otherwise they will not receive it well.
If we receive math manipulative's and activities, it will show the students that learning math can be fun! I would love to use the dice with students in a small group setting. Playing addition and subtraction games could provide reinforcement once the skills have been taught to the entire group. Puzzles would serve as an excellent opportunity for my students to work cooperatively with each other to complete a task. Having a class set of place value boards and number lines would allow the students to demonstrate what they know while being able to do it in a fun way. These materials would drastically enrich our curriculum.
My students are very poor.
They have very few games at home, and would love to have the opportunity to "play" during school time. This project is important because it will show my students that learning math can be creative and exciting. It is my job to make sure they value what I am required to teach them, and enjoy the time they spend in my classroom. I believe that using games in the classroom will do just that!
