Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a Title I school in the Balch Springs area where around 97% of our students live in a low-income household. My school is committed to creating a safe, fun learning environment where all students are actively engaged and eager to learn. We are always encouraged to think outside the box as well as different ways to make an impact.
With a variety of learning styles and needs, my students learn best when they are shown concepts in different ways.
They love activities that require collaboration with their peers as well as getting to move around and create their own work rather than answering questions from a textbook.
My Project
My students need Volume Hands-On Measurement Center, 'Smath, and Multiply, Divide and Conquer Game to practice critical math skills in the classroom. Math use to get a bad rep for being the “textbook” subject that kids did not look forward to. Now days, teachers are encouraged to think outside the textbook by implementing math activities that engage and excite students. What better way to practice math skills than hands-on games? The “S’math” game will be used as a station where students can have fun while using critical thinking to create number sentences. The “Volume Hands-on Measurement Center” is another activity students will do during stations, allowing them to get a hands-on approach to a very complicated concept for 5th graders. Lastly, the “Multiply, Divide, & Conquer” game is another station students will have in order to practice crucial computation skills in a fun, engaging way.
