Making Math Matter: Mathematical Literature for Struggling Learners
My students need access to books about mathematical topics in order to develop a stronger connection between numeracy and their daily lives.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a public charter school in Providence, Rhode Island. The majority of them are eligible for free or reduced lunch, and nearly all of them are students of color.
My students are special because they truly embody the definition of a collaborative learning community.
They love working together and talking about their ideas. They are committed to their own learning and they understand that each person has an important role on our team.
My students are guided by our school pledge that we strive to abide by each day: "I take care of myself. I take care of others. I take care of my school."
My Project
Having a selection of inviting, engaging math concept books, picture books, and literature will help my students to make math more personal. I work exclusively with struggling mathematicians in grades K-5. For many students, math is elusive because they don't understand the applications for numeracy in their daily lives. Often when students are exposed to a concept with a direct example of how it applies, they are more successful with the abstract concepts as well. The elements of a story bring math to life. Mathematical concept books, picture books, and literature provide the perfect bridge for struggling learners to access math content in a non-threatening way.
