My students attend a public charter school in an inner city setting. Roughly 90% are children of color/minorities. Most of them live below the poverty line and cannot wait to get to school each day. I have never in my life encountered a school culture that is as caring, welcoming, and supportive as these children are, yet our resources are extremely limited. My first graders value resilience, determination, perseverance, focus, and patience. They demonstrate these qualities on a daily basis and recognize them in their peers. They understand the importance of these habits of mind. Our school is a maritime themed charter school that prides itself on rigorous academics and unforgettable experiences. For many of our children, the curriculum, designed to include maritime themed activities, offers opportunities that our children may otherwise never get (like swimming lessons in the youngest grades and sailing lessons in older grades). These kids deserve the best the world has to give!
