Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things exciting and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences that motivate them to do their best!
My students are high energy, enthusiastic and excited about learning!
They are an incredibly grateful bunch of kiddos and I cannot wait to see the excitement on their faces when they see their new materials!
My Project
Working in a low-income school, many of my students go home and do not even have a pencil to do their homework. This not only makes learning more difficult for these students but it also limits these students' motivations to do their work. Math is a particularly tough subject for these students to navigate, therefore, having manipulatives such as ten-frame dice and fraction pieces will be so helpful in their academic growth.
By having fun, colorful materials for them to use, it will help to improve their motivation and inspire a love of learning!
These materials will also help students who struggle to understand the abstract concepts that they will face in Math. By having hands-on materials that they can see and move, it will bring the concepts to life and should improve understanding. For example, something as simple as colorful counters can bring to life an addition sentence, part-part-whole problems or ten-frames. The number line is another great visual to help students with their number sense as well as addition and subtraction.
Teaching with manipulatives also gives students an opportunity to grow independently and learn new strategies to solve anything!!
Teaching students through games and learning centers is a key component to any classroom and I know that my students would be so grateful for the opportunity to learn with these materials.
