This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have grit! Character. Spirit. Perseverance. Passion.

Everyone has a story.

My students may only be 9, 10 and 11, but they already have a lifetime worth of stories to tell. It is my job to provide them with the tools to help them refine their storytelling.

I am one of the lucky people who enjoy going to work every day, so I am happy to be part of the 99%. My students are free spirits and are sponges waiting to soak everything up. They attend school in a densely populated part of the city.

My Project

Math is so important! When the students do not have a strong number sense, they cannot do basic addition and subtraction, let alone being able to multiply or divide. I have 8 students who are still working on counting to 50, and improving one-to-one number correspondence. 15 of my 50 students are far below basic and 15 of are below basic when it comes to their math achievement. Some 5th graders still cannot multiple. My students need an iPad air to use during independent work time. I need the iPad in order to give the kids access to some hand-on technological learning and hopefully gain financial literacy. Apps like "Bugs and Numbers," "Math Drills," "Multiflow: Times Tables Reimagined," will allow my students to manipulate, study, and practice math in another way to perhaps cater to their stronger learning modality. We don't have the tools some of the students need to be independently learning.

Studies have shown that if students do not succeed in elementary school, many will not make it through middle school and will become a part of the high school dropout statistics.

Your support will help fill some achievement gaps in providing financial and mathematical literacy to our future generation. May giving them the basics provide them hope that they can be engineers and architects and not destined to a life working at a minimum wage job.
