Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The greatest thing I can teach our children as a math teacher is how to be financially literate. In today's world knowing how to handle your money well is a skill well needed.
I teach 7th grade math in a New York City public school.
My class is an Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) class. There are both general education students and students with special needs in the classroom. The goal of this class setting is to give higher functioning students with special needs the opportunity to learn in a general education environment.
My Project
In an ICT class there are two certified teachers in the class. This allows for more opportunities for hands on station learning activities. When I teach fractions, decimals, and percents, I usually assign a project were students pretend to go shopping, budget for a trip, or go to a restaurant. I would like to create a classroom mock experience of all of those things. To do so, I would need play money (coins and dollars), a cash register, and games to reinforce the math skills they will be learning. With these materials, my students will be able to create a mock store, bank, or restaurant.
These activities are what will carry the essential skills of the learning unit into the real world of now and the future.
There is no end to the impact this will have on their lives.
