FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Rivera's classroom raised $192
This project is fully funded
Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The moment my students walk through my classroom door, they are ready to get to work. I say, "Are you ready to rock?" and they respond with, "Ready to roll!" I expect nothing but the best from them, and I strive to be the best teacher and provide the best classroom environment I can.
My school serves Latino, Polynesian, and African-American students who live in deep poverty.
These are amazing students, full of life and character, who deserve nothing but the best. Most live in unfortunate situations at home; therefore, the classroom must be anything but unfortunate. I strive to make sure my students have all that they need to be successful in their academics.
My Project
These materials will be used to make place value as concrete as possible when learning so when the abstract thinking needed to solve higher order math comes along, the students will have a solid place value sense which in all reality, is the foundation for number sense.
If students cannot make sense of numbers, of wholes and decimals/fractions, then the rest of math will be one big convoluted mess.
Students need to be able to make sense of the numbers they are working with. They can certainly memorize algorithms and procedures for working equations and expressions but math isn't a magical formula. Most students can't even explain why the formula works. That's not math. Math is logical. Math is explainable. Math makes sense if and only when students have a firm grasp of place value, hence having number sense.
My goal with these materials is for the students to use not only their mind but their hands and full body. For instance, the students will physically walk to 24.8 on the large number line mat and explain why and how they know that spot is representative of 24.8. Please partner with me and help me bring these math materials to my students. Thank you in advance.
