This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a high-poverty school with very limited resources. 100% of students are offered a free hot breakfast and lunch. A large number of my students attend a before-school program AND an after-school program, leaving them at school for close to a total of 8-10 hours per day. There is limited parent involvement in my classroom, as most parents are busy with either work or attending school themselves. With all of this data, it is so surprising that my students are still passionate about learning, regardless of their lack of resources.

As an educator at a high poverty school, I am inspired to gather more resources for students to thrive and further their love of learning!

My Project

Math tools, like rekenreks and ten frames are an essential tool for primary number sense. The rekenrek separates twenty beads into two rows of ten and color codes them (5 white beads, 5 red beads). This tool may be simple but it is very powerful for these young minds.

Rekenrek and Ten Frame tools help students build conceptual ability by keeping the mathematics of counting, addition, and subtraction systematic and concrete.

It forces students to see numbers in the context of benchmark numbers which will only help them in later grades as these numbers play into multiplication and division as well. Students can physically manipulate tools to enhance and show their thinking.
