My Students

Organized chaos is a great way to describe my classroom. I have a very diverse and lively group of students. I have a wide range of abilities with half of my class working below grade level and many of the others above grade level. It can be a challenge keeping them all engaged and on task.

I teach 5th grade at a title one public school which means the majority of my students are living at are below the poverty level.

Due to learning disabilities and poverty my students face many challenges, but they are still curious and eager learners. They have a variety of learning styles, but most of my students learn by doing. They thrive on hands on activities, especially in math. They get excited when they finally master a skill that had been difficult. Even though they struggle academically they want to succeed and are willing to work hard.

My Project

Because of the learning styles of my students they learn best with hands on activities and games. The games and materials will help me keep them engaged and on task. Since I have a wide range of levels in my class I need materials that will challenge my higher students and help my struggling students master math skills that are difficult for them. These materials will meet the needs of all my students. They will keep my more independent students engaged while I work one on one or with small groups. These games will make learning math fun. With struggling students that is half the battle. If it is fun they are going to be more focused and able to experience success. These games cover many different skill such as multiplication, division, fractions, geometry, equations and variables, measurement and problem solving. These materials will help my students learn how to work together cooperatively in groups. Most importantly these materials will help my students experience success.

These materials will have a huge impact on my math instruction.

They will help me to meet the different needs of my students and make sure they all experience success. I believe once a struggling student experiences success it motivates them to try even harder. They then realize that they might learn differently but they are just as smart as everyone else. Once a student experiences success there is no stopping them. Help me to help my students achieve their full potential.
